Rick Kelly to Drive Nissan's V8 Supercar Challenger for First Time

2013-nissan-altima-v8-supercar-005

Rick Kelly will drive Nissan's new V8 Supercar challenger for the first time this weekend.

The Nissan Altima will be on display publicly at the Sydney Telstra 500 on Friday and Kelly, who won the title in 2006, will run the car's first laps on Sunday morning.

Built to the new 'Car of the Future' regulations by Kelly Racing, which changes to Nissan Motorsport for 2013, it will be on view in the V8 Supercar Pit Pavilion.

"The interest in the Nissan Altima V8 Supercar has been overwhelming all year, especially now that we have unveiled the first car," said Kelly.

"So we are pleased to show fans our first Nissan Altima V8 Supercar, the car that will dawn the new era of V8 Supercars from 2013, at the final event of this season at the Sydney Telstra 500 this weekend."

The two-time Bathurst winner says being a part of its development makes him even more excited about the run than the fans.

"While I'm sure that the fans will be excited to see the Altima in the flesh for the first time, there's no doubt that the most excited person to hear this news confirmed is actually me," he said.

"I've been busting to get my first drive of the new Nissan all year long as we've been watching the car take shape in the various departments of our team workshop.

"So to get the chance to drive the Altima V8 Supercar in front of a crowd at the Sydney Olympic Park street circuit is going to be a fantastic buzz."

Nissan DeltaWing Included in Popular Science’s "2012 Best of What’s New"

2012-nissan-delta-wing_600x0w

Though the Nissan DeltaWing has not done too much in the racing world yet, it certainly has gained its share of notoriety. The latest notoriety is likely one of its biggest achievements , as it was named to Popular Science’s "2012 Best of What’s New" list, which is included in the December 2012 printing of the magazine.

Popular Science releases this list every year, which contains 12 different categories and covers 100 new technologies, so making the cut is quite the achievement. We have certainly enjoyed watching the DeltaWing grow ever since it was just an unusual concept on a piece of paper, so its inclusion comes as no surprise to us. Even with its unusual proportions and relatively low power output, the DeltaWing has already run in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Petite Le Mans and is set to run as a classified car in the 2013 American Le Mans Series.

While the 24 Hours of Le Mans race didn’t turn out too well, the Petit Le Mans ended very well, with the Delta Wing placing in the top five.

A belated congratulations to the DeltaWing crew on its fifth-place finish at the Petite Le Mans and a huge congratulations to it for this awesome recognition!

A Positive Review from DealerRater!

Dealerrater_full

Check out this glowing review we received from a happy customer!

"From the first follow up internet call made to me, to the moment I stepped foot in the dealership these guys at Red Bank Nissan made me feel like i was their most important customer. The dealership treated me with the utmost respect and professionalism!!

Greg my sales agent helped me thru the test drive and inspection of the vehicle and the sales manager Tom Wall made the usually tedious and cumbersome job of financing the vehicle one that made us both feel like we received the best value for our dollar and it was painless. I walked away with a smile.

The business manager Robert Broit made the final step painless and helped me get thru all the paperwork with ease.

I would recommend these guys to anyone in the market for a new or used vehicle with confidence that they will also receive the same exemplary service."

Nissan concept at L.A. Auto Show hints at future crossover

Nissan

Concept vehicles at auto shows are a funny business. Some are far-off interpretations of current vehicles, which may never see actual production. Others are merely thinly-disguised previews of something an automaker has up its sleeve in the next year.

Nissan's Hi-Cross Concept falls distinctly into the latter category. The vehicle, which will be a part of Nissan's display at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, wears typical concept window dressing like a space-age interior and exotic headlight and taillight treatments. Yet the fundamentals of this concept's shape, size, and design all hint at a forthcoming version of Nissan's Rogue crossover SUV.

Nissan has had a busy 2012, launching all-new versions of its seven-passenger Pathfinder SUV, the Altima midsize sedan and the compact Sentra. That trend will continue in 2013, with a new Rogue being the next new vehicle to hit Nissan showrooms. The vehicle is rumored to go on sale in early summer 2013, and a production version will probably break cover at the 2013 New York Auto Show in late March.

Though the production version will have real headlights, the basic proportions of this concept's grille, front bumper and headlight shape are similar to other Nissan products like the Murano and Pathfinder. Given the ubiquity of the continuously variable transmission (CVT) throughout Nissan's lineup, this vehicle will very likely have one. Power will no doubt come from a four cylinder engine in the base Rogue.

Nissan Plans For New Hybrid, Plug-In Cars: One Per Year

Nissan-logo-opt

Nissan might be investing heavily in its electric car program, but the automaker hasn't forgotten hybrid vehicles completely.

In fact, the company is set to launch one hybrid or plug-in car per year for the next few years, allowing it to compete in a market where hybrid vehicles are gaining increasing market share.

Joining existing vehicles like the 2012 Infiniti M35h, Nissan is developing a range of hybrids and is set to implement mild hybrid technology across its range.

We recently drove a prototype of the luxury hybrid crossover  in Japan. It pairs a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a single-motor hybrid system, boosting torque and allowing the car to drive on electric power alone under light loads.

Following the Infiniti JX, Automotive News suggests a plug-in hybrid will follow in 2015 (though Nissan is revealing no details as yet), and the company aims to release at least one hybrid a year over the next several years.

The increase in hybrids and plug-in hybrids at Nissan is thought to be a symptom of slow full-electric vehicle sales.

Even so, Nissan still believes that some form of electric propulsion is the future.

"All vehicles need some form of electrification," said Mitsuhiko Yamashita, Nissan's executive vice president for global R&D, "Motor assistance really is key. Otherwise they can't meet fuel economy requirements beyond 2015."

Meanwhile, 'micro hybrid' technologies like stop-start and brake energy regeneration are expected to permeate throughout Nissan's range, improving the fuel efficiency of even regular models.

Called S-Hybrid--S for 'smart' or 'simple'--Nissan says the technology can boost economy by around 10 percent, for a cost of around $1,910 or less.

2014 Nissan GT-R to be more fashionable

Gtr

A couple of days ago, Nissan released the 2013 version of the GT-R with a few mild updates to make the car more refined. More substantial changes are saved for the 2014 model, as revealed by GT-R chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno in an official statement.

The new changes will have nothing to do with performance. The GT-R has no direct rival in terms of performance, so why would Nissan try and beat themselves? Instead, they are going to expand the car’s customer base and attract new buyers.

To that end the next GT-R will be more “fashionable” and better looking than the current car. GT-R buyers are predominantly those who want performance at a budget.  While that is excellent from a petrolhead’s point of view, the car's image could improve. That is why Nissan is seeking new customers to develop a new persona for the GT-R. The new fashionista GT-R will have a fancy interior and probably new vibrant colors. They have already come up with an “Amber Red” special edition GT-R in Japan.

To learn more about the direction Nissan GT-R is heading, pay attention to Mr. Mizuno in the video below:

Make your own DIY steering wheel cover

Diycover

For those who have hot or cold steering wheels, need something a little softer to grip, or just feel the need to personalize their vehicles, this is the project for you! Follow the steps below to make your own customized steering wheel cover.

1.  Measure the circumference of your steering wheel with a tape measurer. Then, take the tape measurer and wrap it around the week like you would your hand when grabbing it. This will tell you how wide to make it.

2.  Cut out a strip of fabric at those dimensions plus seam allowance (about a centimeter more).

3.  The easiest way to sew is to fold over half an inch of the fabric on each long side (the circumference of the wheel) to make a casing for the elastic.  Sew those down.  You'll want to use small stretchy elastic.

4.  To cut out the elastic to fit, stretch the elastic almost as far as it will stretch to the circumference of the steering wheel.  When you relax it, it should be considerably smaller than the wheel but able to stretch to that measurement.

5.  Feed both elastics through the casings you just made and secure on both ends. Then sew the two short ends of the strip of fabric together to make a complete circle.

6.  Done!

Nissan’s engineers trying to replicate human skin

Nissanskin

With cars getting generally better and better all the time, the things that automakers seek to improve become more and more subtle. Like how everything feels. Up until fairly recently, the only concern about how interior materials interacted with your hands was basically just making sure they didn't lacerate you too badly.

Now, natural materials and plastics are being chosen and developed so they actually feel pleasant and luxurious to the touch. Jalopink met with members of Nissan's team that is working on these sorts of things and they showed me how they're trying to make materials that feel like the fingers touching them.

When many reviewers evaluate the inside of a car, there's a clear preference for "soft touch" plastics. They just feel better, and provide a greater perception of quality.

In developing plastics that feel good to the touch, Nissan's engineers have four main criteria they focus on: soft/hard, warm/cool, rough/smooth, dry/moist.

It seems the ideal "high-feeling" materials, according to Nissan's studies, are soft, warm, smooth, and moist.

So, Nissan is making plastics that replicate the feel of the skin on your fingers. That may sound a bit ghoulish, but, really, it's not. The goal has always been to create materials that cause the people who interact with the car to feel the most pleasant, pleasurable feelings. And, if you think about it, when it comes to tactile sensations, what's more pleasant and comforting than holding someone's hand?

We're sort of pre-programmed to enjoy the feel of other fingers against our own. Hence, that's the target of these engineers.

It's not just the level of softness— as in resistance to pressure— of a human finger pad— it's also the texture. Their research has found that surface ridges or other patterns are perceived to be most preferable when their scale most closely approximates the scale of the ridges of a human fingerprint.

So, at least as far as tactile characteristics, Nissan actually is seeking to replicate human finger skin, and then cover almost every surface inside of a car in it. And, really, it makes complete, data-supported sense, and will make cars that are likely very pleasant to drive and be in.

Nissan GT-R one of MotorTrend's Top 10 Future Classics

Nissangtr

We, of course, weren't surprised that the Nissan GT-R was selected as part of MotorTrend's Top 10 future classics, but we love to hear good press about this awesome performance vehicle. Here's what MotorTrend has to say:

"What can we say about Godzilla that hasn’t already been said? Not only is the Nissan GT-R highly desirable, but it’s an incredibly important car for Nissan. The R35 GT-R is significant because it’s the first GT-R to ever be legally sold in the U.S., and it’s taken the segment by storm, frequently finishing on the podium in our Best Driver’s Car competitions. Despite its relatively low price, Godzilla remains a rarity on the streets, and though it has love-it-or-hate-it styling, the GT-R will without a doubt remain desirable in the future."

Nissan Developing Independent Steering Control, Expected to Hit the Market in Late 2013

Nissancar

The engineers over at Nissan have been busy as of late. The Japanese automaker recently unveiled its new multifaceted rear-view camera system for the Altima and today, it unveiled another new technology. Nissan has been developing an in-house steering technology that allows the driver to have control of each individual wheel angle through the steering input.  What makes this system so special is that instead of the conventional system used in the majority of vehicles  on the road today, Nissan’s steering system dictates through electronic signals.

The new steering system takes where the driver is turning the wheel and electronically relays a signal down to the wheels. Without all of the mechanical parts, the driver can get a response down to the wheels faster. Besides controlling the wheels through an electronic system, it also numbs rough road surfaces, taking pressure of the driver. This helps the driver as they no longer have to grip the steering wheel with white knuckles to control the vehicle while going over uneven terrain.

Along with the new steering system, Nissan has also been developing a camera that’s mounted above the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. This camera is tasked with knowing when the vehicle is leaving a lane and picking up on other change in direction. The camera scans the road to improve stability and changes the input angel of the wheels so that the vehicle can continue on in the lane it’s traveling in. This camera systems relays commands through many different electronic control units which works to cut down on redundant steering motions which in turn, makes the driver feel less tired at the end of a drive.

Both of these systems are made possible by many ECUs that ride on-board. In the event that the electronics system experiences a complete and total failure, a backup clutch will kick in to reconnect the steering to the wheels immediately.

While Nissan hasn’t come out and said when this technology will be available exactly, it did say some Infiniti models will begin using it within a year. Stay tuned as more details unfold about what vehicles will get this technology and when exactly that it will be available.

Accidentally hit the gas? Nissan has your back.

Nissanheadquarters

You've probably heard of "Brake Assist", the in-car technology that automatically slows a vehicle when the onboard computer senses that a collision is imminent.

You've probably also heard of "Lane Assist", which lets drivers know when they've drifted out of their travel lane.

Now, Nissan has introduced something called "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication". And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like: a high-tech tool that compensates when drivers accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake.

According to Nissan, this new feature is specifically designed to cut back on accidents in "parking lots and other spaces where a car could collide with walls if a driver mistakenly depresses the accelerator instead of the brake pedal". We'd like to think that the technology will reduce potential run-ins with pedestrians and other vehicles, too, though it's not yet clear that it will.

The system makes use of four cameras on Nissan's "Around View Monitor", paired with sonar sensors. Together, these gadgets detect when a vehicle is in a parking space and if there are walls in its path of travel. Though it doesn't automatically park or un-park vehicles, it can take over the accelerator and the brake if necessary to avoid a collision.

The "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication (with Carpark Detection Function)" is all part of Nissan's Vision Zero safety plan, which has the very lofty goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries from accidents. The Vision Zero plan has led to the creation of a "Safety Shield" for Nissan vehicles, which works to address safety shortcomings on vehicles and counter them during accidents.

While this technology sounds interesting and very useful, leading us one step closer toward fully autonomous vehicles, it's not going to appear on U.S. cars -- at least not anytime soon. It's scheduled to debut on the Nissan Elgrand, a luxury van available only in Japan and key Asian markets. That's a logical choice, since the Elgrand has been the guinea pig for much of Nissan's new safety equipment, and since the Elgrand's well-heeled owners probably don't mind shelling out for this sort of technology.

Does this kind of safety technology interest you? When it rolls out to vehicles in the U.S. and elsewhere, will you buy it?

Jay Leno Reviews the 240Z and Grills Nissan on a Successor

Nissan

Whether you love or hate Jay Leno as a “pop culture” late night show host, you still can’t help but love him in his position on Jay Leno’s Garage. In the latest episode, Jay makes it all the way around the world to Japan and test drives a Fairlady 240Z. Not only is the 240Z just one of those timeless and iconic sports cars, but it is revolutionary for the Japanese sports car world.

Jay then takes some time out to talk with his friend that heads up Nissan’s design team and he has a nice surprise for his friend, as he jokingly grills him on the rumored 240Z remake. We actually get a good glimpse at the preliminary design silhouette of what we can only assume would be a revived 240Z and a look at some of the concept drawings made of it and the current 370Z.

What’s cool though is that his friend does not play the denial act that most design heads would do. He all but confirms the fact that Nissan is planning something big for its 8th anniversary which comes about in 2013, and makes it clear that the 240Z revival may be said big thing.

Just seeing the Nissan design room was cool enough, but getting semi-confirmation of the 240Z – even if it was more of a non-denial than a confirmation – was pretty cool. Enjoy!

Here are the latest customer reviews on Nissan World of Red Bank:

"My experience with Nissan World in Red Band was great! I came in with a vehichle to trade and was looking to get into something newer and safer for my family. I had Gregg Harkey for a saleman who was very helpful, and there was no pressure like there is usually at other dealers. I got a very fair price for my trade, and purchased a beautiful Infinity FX35 that I am in love with. Paul Uliano in finance was a pleasure to do business with and really worked hard to get me a payment that I could afford, and at a finance rate that was better than I expected. I would recommend Nissan World of Red Bank to all of my friends and family, and to anyone looking for a new or used car from down to earth, low pressure professionals, who will leave you feeling like you got a great deal and a great car! Thank you Gregg and Paul, I love my new car!"

Facelifted Nissan 370Z unveiled ahead of Paris Motor Show

370z

Nissan has unveiled a facelifted version of the 370Z just a week before the Paris Motor Show where it will be on display.  The Japanese automaker has initiated the changes to update the four-year-old design of the car and bring it in line with current design trends.

Nissan has made revisions to the front end which includes a new bumper, vertically stacked daytime running LEDs and a re-profiled air intake. The car will now be offered with new paint schemes and a revised set of 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the interiors remain the same with change in the quality of plastic. Underneath the hood, Nissan has stuck to the same 3.7-litre V6 which churns out 322bhp powering the car from 0-100kmph in just 5.5 seconds.  Despite the facelift, the price of the car is not expected to change.

Say hello to the Taxi of Tomorrow! Heading to NYC in fall of 2013

Taxi

The Taxi & Limousine Commission approved the Nissan NV 200 for the city's over 13,000 yellow cabs.

City cabs will have to be a Nissan - dubbed the "Taxi of Tomorrow" - beginning in the fall of 2013.

Any vehicle purchased before then can remain on the streets until it has to be retired due to wear and tear, usually every five years.

The TLC board approved the Nissan as the city's official taxi in a five-two vote.

TLC Commission David Yassky said the switch to the Nissan, which is being tailor made specifically for the New York City taxi industry, is a "leap forward."

"We won't just leave it to the auto industry to put cars out and then hope it meets the needs of the industry," he said.

New Yorkers always pester him to bring back the iconic checker cab, he said.

"I truly believe that when this fleet hits the streets, I'm not going to hear that anymore," he said.

The Nissan will have phone chargers, a panoramic sun roof, grab handles and a step for easy access.

Here's the latest customer reviews on Nissan World of Red Bank:

"From my phone call to the dealer to the hand shake at the end of the deal I was very pleased. Dawn was very personable and friendly and I highly recommend her to anyone looking to purchase a Nissan. She was also my first woman salesperson and I think she did her job very well. I have purchased only Ford models for the past 30 plus years and now that I own my first Nissan I'm thrilled. The drive on my way home actually felt as if I were flying a small plane because the car was quiet, felt strong and safe. The seats are so comfortable as well. Andrew who got out car ready and explained all the bells and whistles to use was fantastic. If only everyone could enjoy their job and deliver as well as he did. Tom, the general manager and our finance dept. person were great as well. I highly recommend Dawn Licata to anyone who might be searching for a Nissan. I am so happy with my new 2013 Nissan Altima."

"I bought my truck at this dealership and was left with such a good buying experience I continue to use the dealership for my servicing. This particular time was my 15,000 mile service. Upon arriving I was greeted with a smile. I explained that I had a road trip coming up and would like to make an appointment for my service ASAP. Cory Newton informed me that they were slow today and he would be able to squeeze me in. He was very up front about the price and was willing to work with my specific demands. I was able to watch the full service being done without any dirty looks or repercussions from the mechanic or staff. When the mechanic pulled my truck around I was able to ask very specific questions which he answered very politely. Cory then went through my entire bill with me and asked if I had any questions. I feel like only at this dealership can I come away with a positive feeling after having parted with my money. The prices were average but the staff is exceptional."

Thanks for the continued customer feedback! We appreciate it!

When cars are in development, one item high on the checklist is safety. With current recalls making regular news, car safety is more important than ever.

In Stanfield, Nissan has been safety-testing cars at their Arizona Test Center (ATC), or proving ground, since 1987. The only Nissan proving ground in the USA, the facility is tucked away on over 3,000 acres in a very high security compound. About 150 employees test cars at the facility, where Nissan tests vehicle performance prior to public launch.

Why choose Arizona for a test track?

Many car manufacturers have chosen to test their new vehicles in Arizona weather conditions, especially in extreme heat. Within a few hours of driving time, Arizona also provides extreme cold, especially in the early month of the year, plus mountainous driving and higher altitudes.

With many wide-open roads, highways, and near-empty rural roads, Nissan can rack up 2 million miles on public roads, plus 2 million miles on their closed test track every year. Arizona’s weather facilitates testing almost every day of the year. Just a few very windy days might interfere with a particular planned test.

What gets tested?

Nissan has a major commitment in its test track, with an elaborate system which tests for reliability, performance, braking, noises, air conditioning function, and other criteria.

Sophisticated equipment allows Nissan to record conditions found on roads and mimic those conditions with equipment that shakes, rattles, and-almost-rolls the cars as they are checked for every conceivable road hazard and variable. Some of the testing happens in an indoor environment without drivers; some outdoors with test drivers.
What Nissan is attempting to do is “accelerate” the aging of the cars to condense what a car might endure in years of driving into a much shorter time span.

To accomplish the testing, a seven-day-a-week operation runs nearly around the clock. Contrary to the popular image of a glamorous speedway experience, car test drivers can have a very rigorous and boring schedule, as they drive for hours testing the cars for endurance.

The 5.7-mile oval test track might have one test driver driving around and around for many hours. Another driver might be navigating on a road that has a constant series of bumps, or wet conditions with and without salt, or potholes, or jaw-jarring humps. On occasion, drivers have even had close encounters with coyotes that have wandered in from the wild. One segment of testing involves some 40,000 Belgian blocks that simulate a road segment in Japan, which gives new respect to what drivers in other countries endure on their roads.

A “four-post shaker” lets Nissan check what vibrations for 2-5 days on a road can do to a vehicle and its tires. Results are recorded and changes are made, if needed.

What the testing is determining is how a car holds up to the many tests it must endure before Nissan is able to introduce a new model for the general public to drive. If something breaks during testing, they want to know why and fix it.

The test-driving experience

Anita MacFadden, manager of the Arizona Test Center, arranged for this reporter to have a small taste of what it feels like to test a car. John Van Tine, who trains test drivers and supervises the crew who clear the track after emergencies, demonstrated some moves on their “skid pad.” It was evident that test driving is a tough job.

One car provided for the sample test drive looked like it had training wheels. Built in Smyrna, Tennessee, (one of three US manufacturing locations), the Maxima was our demo car. Far from making the ride easier, the “training wheels” are meant to simulate icy and slippery road conditions. John took the turns like the pro he is, with helmet on and seat belts mandatory.

Skidding around, the glamour factor definitely evaporated. After several turns, skidding and turning at a dizzying pace, it was apparent that not everyone could handle the demands of that particular test. However, the test is necessary, as icy conditions occurring in cold climates would certainly demand control of the situation and excellent road handling.

Unlike years ago when drivers were encouraged to “pump their brakes” if sliding on ice, anti-lock brakes do not require that action. A slow, steady, firm application of the brake is now needed.

Next up for testing was a shiny, red Infiniti G37. This time John navigated the same skids at an even greater speed, spinning the car around in an even faster, tighter turn ratio. Glad I’d had a light lunch, I realized that excellence as a test driver is definitely not in my skill set.

Skidding, slaloms, coasting down and then up to speed, and checking how long it takes to slow down are all part of the testing experience.

While we did our testing, other drivers were driving around repetitively on the 5.7-mile oval. The oval has banking curves and requires concentration. Sometimes, the drivers must brake quickly. Checkpoints alert any new drivers that someone is on the course so no collisions happen.

At Nissan’s facility

Employees of ATC are allowed to lease a Nissan vehicle. As part of the arrangement, they complete questionnaires at intervals so their consumer experience can be considered.

Nissan provides space for third party vendors to test their vehicles on the tracks and equipment as well.

The land adjacent and between the tracks is also used by a farmer to grow hay, which has the dual purpose of dust control.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Brakes

Brakes

Your brakes are the single most important safety feature on your car. Don't put yourself or your family at risk this summer by riding around on worn down or faulty brakes.

Brakes need to be replaced when the lining on your brake pad or brake shoe is worn down past the minimum thickness specified by the car manufacturer or state law. You can have your brake linings checked at any normal service shop.

Here are some signs that your brakes need to be checked:

  • Your brake pedal becomes very soft and mushy
  • Your brake pedal is very hard and resistant
  • Your brake pedal rests too low or too high
  • Indication or warning lights on the dashboard
  • Loud and constant scraping and grinding sounds coming from the brakes

Interestingly, squealing brakes are not necessarily a sign of a problem. Brakes squeal and squeak for a wide variety of reasons, including moisture on the brake pads, discs, shoes and drums. You should only become concerned if the squealing becomes a scraping or grinding noise. This is a sign of metal-to-metal contact, which can permanently damage brake parts.

If you notice a brake problem, it pays to have it inspected or repaired as soon as possible. The cost of a brake repair can increase dramatically if even minor problems aren't fixed in a timely manner.

Nissan aims to be a milage leader

Nissan

The push for fuel economy leadership will heavily influence the look and performance of Nissan's new products for the next three years. The effort will be focused on three primary areas: cutting vehicle weight, improving aerodynamics and reducing friction in the engine and transmission.

Those three priorities already can be seen in the 2013 Altima, which went on sale in June with 20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing model. They have also shaped the upcoming Sentra compact, Pathfinder SUV, Versa hatchback and Rogue crossover.

The friction-reduction directive has Nissan more focused on improving existing powertrains rather than plunging into new engine programs. But Nissan also has developed new engines that will see greater use in the North American market in the coming product cycle.

Chief among them: Nissan's in-house developed hybrid drive, which has yet to debut in a U.S. Nissan vehicle, and turbocharged direct-injection engines that have been used only in the Juke so far.

Here is a rundown of Nissan product plans for the 2013 through 2015 model years.

Sentra: Nissan will launch a new generation of its compact sedan for 2013, appearing late this year with a more Altima-like design. The outgoing model was perceived to have too radical a design for the mass-appeal segment. Nissan now hopes to move the car into the sweet spot in which the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic thrive, typically at three times the Sentra's volume.

Pathfinder: A redesigned Pathfinder will arrive in mid-fall, moving from a body-on-frame truck to a unibody construction it will share with the Infiniti JX. Although still two months from reaching showrooms, the next Pathfinder already is being touted as having the highest fuel efficiency of the mid-sized crossover segment, claiming 20 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

Vehicle weight will fall by 500 pounds, primarily from dropping the truck frame. The 2013 model will have a 3.5-liter V6 engine instead of the previous model's 4.0-liter V6, and will switch to a more fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission.

Versa: The redesigned sedan version of the Versa debuted last year with styling based on the Asian-market Nissan Sunny. The redesigned hatchback will appear late next spring as a 2013 model, based on the Japanese-market Note. The new model will be sportier looking than the current hatchback, with a more angular front end and a pronounced slope to the back roof.

Rogue: The popular compact crossover will be redesigned for the 2014 mode year at the same time production moves from Japan to Smyrna, Tenn. The next Rogue is likely to use a design influenced by the Hi-Cross global crossover concept shown this year at the Geneva auto show, which featured a rounded front end and a backward-sloping roofline. Although engine plans vary from market to market on global platforms, the Geneva concept envisioned a hybrid powertrain mated with a 2.0-liter engine.

Titan: The second generation of the full-sized pickup was to have appeared as a 2014 model but was pushed back a year as a result of the strain on engineering resources caused by the March 2011 Japanese earthquake. The next Titan had been planned as a Chrysler-built 2012 model, but the partnership was scrapped during the 2009 economic crash.

Nissan is considering Titan variations to include a regular cab body style, which it has never offered, and also a more fuel-efficient smaller-displacement engine option. The current generation offers only a 5.6-liter V8.

Leaf:  The biggest change to the electric Leaf in the near term is expected to be its price, which should be helped when it moves from Japan production to Smyrna in December. The company's main focus in product enhancement for now is extending the range of its lithium ion battery.

GT-R: Contrary to a rash of recent press reports, Nissan's high-end GT-R sports car is not dead or scheduled to die. The development program is active, and Nissan is planning an undetermined number of model variations of the low-volume racer to appear in the 2014-16 time frame. Because the sports car is a unique piece of the portfolio, its future development is not being shaped by Nissan's push for fuel-efficiency and weight reduction.

Cube: Nissan will discontinue the cargo version of its quirky B-platform Cube crossover this year. But the nameplate's long-range future is far from certain. Clearly an underachiever, the Cube is selling fewer than 700 units a month so far this year. But it still represents an entry-level, fuel-efficient youth-market product for Nissan in a segment in which sales of the somewhat similar Kia Soul top 10,000 a month. Nissan's position in the segment has been hampered by sourcing the Cube from high-yen Japan, where the model remains popular.

Armada: The full-sized SUV was restyled for the 2008 model year. It is built on the same frame as the Titan pickup and will be redesigned on the same timetable.

370Z: Nissan's next Z will arrive in 2014 as a 2015 model. Nissan designers are trimming down the dimensions. But what is not clear yet is whether Nissan will also have a smaller front-wheel-drive "Mini Z" selling at a lower price point.

Murano: The Murano's second generation launched in January 2008 as a 2009 model. It will be the 2015 model year before the redesigned next generation arrives.

Maxima: The brand's flagship is scheduled for a redesign in 2014 or 2015. As with the new Altima, Nissan will use the redesign to make a significant gain in fuel economy.

Frontier: Production of the pickup is being relocated to Canton, Miss., in time to launch 2013-model sales early next year. No major changes are planned. A reskin is scheduled in 2014, with new sheet metal and improved aerodynamics to improve fuel economy.

Xterra: A reskinned Xterra SUV is scheduled for 2014. The model got a face-lift in 2009.

Juke: The Juke will be freshened for 2014. The limited-edition Juke-R, fitted with the GT-R's turbocharged 480-hp V-6 and a $590,000 sticker price, will continue on a build-to-order basis.
