Make your own DIY steering wheel cover

For those who have hot or cold steering wheels, need something a little softer to grip, or just feel the need to personalize their vehicles, this is the project for you! Follow the steps below to make your own customized steering wheel cover.

1.  Measure the circumference of your steering wheel with a tape measurer. Then, take the tape measurer and wrap it around the week like you would your hand when grabbing it. This will tell you how wide to make it.


2.  Cut out a strip of fabric at those dimensions plus seam allowance (about a centimeter more).

3.  The easiest way to sew is to fold over half an inch of the fabric on each long side (the circumference of the wheel) to make a casing for the elastic.  Sew those down.  You'll want to use small stretchy elastic.

4.  To cut out the elastic to fit, stretch the elastic almost as far as it will stretch to the circumference of the steering wheel.  When you relax it, it should be considerably smaller than the wheel but able to stretch to that measurement.

5.  Feed both elastics through the casings you just made and secure on both ends. Then sew the two short ends of the strip of fabric together to make a complete circle.

6.  Done!

Nissan’s engineers trying to replicate human skin

With cars getting generally better and better all the time, the things that automakers seek to improve become more and more subtle. Like how everything feels. Up until fairly recently, the only concern about how interior materials interacted with your hands was basically just making sure they didn't lacerate you too badly.

Now, natural materials and plastics are being chosen and developed so they actually feel pleasant and luxurious to the touch. Jalopink met with members of Nissan's team that is working on these sorts of things and they showed me how they're trying to make materials that feel like the fingers touching them.

When many reviewers evaluate the inside of a car, there's a clear preference for "soft touch" plastics. They just feel better, and provide a greater perception of quality.

In developing plastics that feel good to the touch, Nissan's engineers have four main criteria they focus on: soft/hard, warm/cool, rough/smooth, dry/moist.

It seems the ideal "high-feeling" materials, according to Nissan's studies, are soft, warm, smooth, and moist.

So, Nissan is making plastics that replicate the feel of the skin on your fingers. That may sound a bit ghoulish, but, really, it's not. The goal has always been to create materials that cause the people who interact with the car to feel the most pleasant, pleasurable feelings. And, if you think about it, when it comes to tactile sensations, what's more pleasant and comforting than holding someone's hand?

We're sort of pre-programmed to enjoy the feel of other fingers against our own. Hence, that's the target of these engineers.

It's not just the level of softness— as in resistance to pressure— of a human finger pad— it's also the texture. Their research has found that surface ridges or other patterns are perceived to be most preferable when their scale most closely approximates the scale of the ridges of a human fingerprint.

So, at least as far as tactile characteristics, Nissan actually is seeking to replicate human finger skin, and then cover almost every surface inside of a car in it. And, really, it makes complete, data-supported sense, and will make cars that are likely very pleasant to drive and be in.

We, of course, weren't surprised that the Nissan GT-R was selected as part of MotorTrend's Top 10 future classics, but we love to hear good press about this awesome performance vehicle. Here's what MotorTrend has to say:

Nissan Developing Independent Steering Control, Expected to Hit the Market in Late 2013

The engineers over at Nissan have been busy as of late. The Japanese automaker recently unveiled its new multifaceted rear-view camera system for the Altima and today, it unveiled another new technology. Nissan has been developing an in-house steering technology that allows the driver to have control of each individual wheel angle through the steering input.  What makes this system so special is that instead of the conventional system used in the majority of vehicles  on the road today, Nissan’s steering system dictates through electronic signals.

The new steering system takes where the driver is turning the wheel and electronically relays a signal down to the wheels. Without all of the mechanical parts, the driver can get a response down to the wheels faster. Besides controlling the wheels through an electronic system, it also numbs rough road surfaces, taking pressure of the driver. This helps the driver as they no longer have to grip the steering wheel with white knuckles to control the vehicle while going over uneven terrain.

Along with the new steering system, Nissan has also been developing a camera that’s mounted above the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. This camera is tasked with knowing when the vehicle is leaving a lane and picking up on other change in direction. The camera scans the road to improve stability and changes the input angel of the wheels so that the vehicle can continue on in the lane it’s traveling in. This camera systems relays commands through many different electronic control units which works to cut down on redundant steering motions which in turn, makes the driver feel less tired at the end of a drive.

Both of these systems are made possible by many ECUs that ride on-board. In the event that the electronics system experiences a complete and total failure, a backup clutch will kick in to reconnect the steering to the wheels immediately.

While Nissan hasn’t come out and said when this technology will be available exactly, it did say some Infiniti models will begin using it within a year. Stay tuned as more details unfold about what vehicles will get this technology and when exactly that it will be available.

Accidentally hit the gas? Nissan has your back.

You've probably heard of "Brake Assist", the in-car technology that automatically slows a vehicle when the onboard computer senses that a collision is imminent.

You've probably also heard of "Lane Assist", which lets drivers know when they've drifted out of their travel lane.

Now, Nissan has introduced something called "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication". And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like: a high-tech tool that compensates when drivers accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake.

According to Nissan, this new feature is specifically designed to cut back on accidents in "parking lots and other spaces where a car could collide with walls if a driver mistakenly depresses the accelerator instead of the brake pedal". We'd like to think that the technology will reduce potential run-ins with pedestrians and other vehicles, too, though it's not yet clear that it will.

The system makes use of four cameras on Nissan's "Around View Monitor", paired with sonar sensors. Together, these gadgets detect when a vehicle is in a parking space and if there are walls in its path of travel. Though it doesn't automatically park or un-park vehicles, it can take over the accelerator and the brake if necessary to avoid a collision.

The "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication (with Carpark Detection Function)" is all part of Nissan's Vision Zero safety plan, which has the very lofty goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries from accidents. The Vision Zero plan has led to the creation of a "Safety Shield" for Nissan vehicles, which works to address safety shortcomings on vehicles and counter them during accidents.

While this technology sounds interesting and very useful, leading us one step closer toward fully autonomous vehicles, it's not going to appear on U.S. cars -- at least not anytime soon. It's scheduled to debut on the Nissan Elgrand, a luxury van available only in Japan and key Asian markets. That's a logical choice, since the Elgrand has been the guinea pig for much of Nissan's new safety equipment, and since the Elgrand's well-heeled owners probably don't mind shelling out for this sort of technology.
